A Guide to Slowing, Spreading, and Sinking Water


Every drop of water that leaves your landscape is a drop you will eventually have to buy back.

In landscapes defined by steep terrain, intense monsoons, and bare soil, unmanaged rainwater vanishes off-site in mere minutes. By the time April rolls around, this rapid runoff leaves behind a dual crisis: severe erosion (losing precious topsoil during peak monsoon) and drought (nutrient and moisture depletion in the brutal summer heat).

At EDW, we believe in a different approach. Before drawing a single line on a design blueprint, we read the land's slope, soil, and seasons. The goal? To mimic how a healthy, natural watershed behaves using a simple, powerful three-part framework: Slow. Spread. Sink.


The Framework: Three Moves to Save Your Soil and Water


Each of these moves is designed to give your land the most valuable resource it needs: time with the water.


01. SLOW: Forcing Water to Stop, Soak, and Stay


Instead of letting rain hurtle down bare earth, we force it to pause. By introducing natural friction, we encourage early percolation.

  • Mimic Natural Watercourses: Integrate a mix of cobble, stone, and gravel to break the water’s initial momentum.

  • Build a Deep Mulch Layer: A 3-to-4-inch layer of mulch dampens the impact of heavy rain, slows down immediate surface flow, and feeds the underlying soil.

  • Dig Infiltration Basins: Create shallow basins (6 to 9 inches deep) designed to hold water just long enough for it to soak downward.

  • Select Resilient Vegetation: Populate these zones with carefully chosen plants that can tolerate alternating periods of intense wetness and dry conditions.


02. SPREAD: Distributing Flow Along the Contours


When water accumulates, it gains speed and cutting power. Spreading it out breaks its destructive energy into manageable steps.

  • Map Natural Runoff Lines: Track the streams forming along the site's natural topography.

  • Ditch + Berm Interventions: Dig level ditches and place the excavated earth downhill to form a protective berm.

  • Contour Trenches: Excavate trenches directly across slopes to halt downhill rushing water.

  • Bioretention Swales: Use shallow channels lined with cobble, stone, and gravel to catch and filter water.

  • Root Interlocking: Plant dense vegetation along steep contours to physically lock the topsoil in place.


03. SINK: Let the Soil—Not the Storm Drain—Do the Work


The ultimate goal is to direct water back where it belongs: into our underground aquifers.

  • Mulched Basins: Use these for slow, deep infiltration and to build up long-term soil nutrients.

  • Dual-Purpose Swales: Design your swales to double as high-performing bioretention zones.

  • Recharge Ponds: Carve out dedicated ponds at the lowest points of the property to actively refill local aquifers.

  • Permeable Surfaces: Ensure that hard landscaping elements never act like a roof. Permeable paving allows water to breathe and pass right through.


Read the Site: 4 Zones to Find Before You Design


Every landscape already wants to do most of this work on its own. Before implementing any strategies, look for these four distinct zones on your property:

  1. High-Elevation Catchment: The topmost points where runoff begins. This is where you position natural slope intercept points to direct water into recharge pits, swales, and percolation trenches.

  2. Surface Runoff & Erosion-Prone Zones: Visible flow paths that actively strip away topsoil during the monsoon and dry out first in the summer. Treat these areas with extreme care.

  3. Bund Intervention Zones: Strategic, level locations along the land's contours perfectly suited for earthen or check bunds to slow, store, and recharge.

  4. Primary Catchment Zones: Low-lying, gently sloping areas. These are your prime locations for rain gardens, detention basins, and large recharge ponds.

Cut the slope into smaller drops. Draw contour trenches, ditch-and-berm pairs, and vegetated swales along the level to buy the slope time. Pair with mulched basins at landing points and a sink zone at the base.

Gentle / Flat


(Water pools, then evaporates fast)

SINK

Gentle ground is your ultimate storage opportunity. Focus on rain gardens, mulched basins, and recharge ponds at low points. Add cobble-stone-mulch beds so pooled water infiltrates instead of evaporating.

Mostly Paved


(Hard surfaces send everything to drains)

SLOW (+ Break Up Surfaces)

Reduce the "roof" effect. Introduce permeable paving, planted edges, and bioretention strips along hard surfaces. Capture roof runoff into mulched basins or cisterns before it ever reaches a drain, then spread the rest across soft ground.

Read the site in zones first (high-elevation down to primary catchment). Then: Slow at the top, Spread across the slope, and Sink at the base. The order is the strategy.
